This is a very strong vintage Pokémon piece and exactly the type of PSA 9 WOTC holo I like for a collection. You have the 2000 Base Set 2 Alakazam holographic rare, card #1/130, graded PSA Mint 9. While Base Set 2 historically received less attention than original Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil, collectors have increasingly recognized it as a legitimate early Wizards of the Coast era set filled with classic artwork and original-generation Pokémon.

Alakazam is especially interesting because this card uses the iconic Ken Sugimori artwork associated with the original Base Set Alakazam. The dark cosmic-style holographic background behind Alakazam is one of the strongest early Pokémon holo designs, in my opinion. Under direct light, the holo pattern gives the card a completely different appearance, with the stars and reflective points surrounding Alakazam. Your photo shows that effect very well.

The PSA 9 grade is a major positive. Vintage WOTC holographics are difficult in high grade because of holo scratching, silvering, edge wear, whitening, and print defects. PSA currently shows a population of 816 PSA 9 copies on one active listing's PSA data, with 4,988 total graded copies reported there. A Mint 9 puts your card just one grade below Gem Mint while avoiding the extreme premium collectors often pay for a PSA 10.

From the front photo, this card presents extremely well. The yellow border looks clean, the card appears well-centered, and the holo has excellent visual appeal. There are several visible reflective holo points throughout the background, which make the card much more attractive in person than a flat scan would suggest. I cannot determine the exact reason PSA gave it a 9 rather than a 10 without seeing the back and inspecting the holo under multiple lighting angles, but visually this is a very strong PSA 9.


What I particularly like about this card is that it sits in a very good collector category: original-generation Pokémon, WOTC era, classic artwork, holographic rare, and PSA 9. You are not relying on a new character or a temporary modern-set hype cycle. Alakazam has more than 25 years of Pokémon history behind it, and the artwork itself is immediately recognizable to collectors who grew up with the original cards.

The weakness is Base Set 2. If this exact card were original Base Set Shadowless or 1st Edition, the value would be dramatically higher. Even regular Base Set generally receives more collector attention.
