Exceptional example of a Chinese wooden wedding basket. Has wear due to age and its condition is becoming fragile. It is a layered application of red paint, red lacquer, and raised detail. There are spots of missing gold gilt floral detail. A beautiful sentiment to present a gift or wedding ring proposal.

Here is a loose translation of the inscription under the lid:

• 右 column: 淮北喬娘桶 (Huáiběi Qiáo Niáng Tǒng)

• 左 column: 天下第壹道 (Tiānxià Dì Yī Dào)

Translation and Context

• Huáiběi Qiáo Niáng Tǒng: This translates to "Huibei Qiao Lady's Bucket." Huaibei is a city in Anhui Province, China. The inscription likely identifies the piece as a specialized style of bucket associated with that region or a specific maker/workshop.

• Tiānxià Dì Yī Dào: This translates to "The Number One Path (or Way) Under Heaven." It is an auspicious and highly laudatory phrase often used to denote superior quality or a prestigious origin.
