ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joe Hilario Herrera (1921–2001), also known as See-Ru (Blue Bird), was one of the most respected Native American painters of the twentieth century. A member of Cochiti Pueblo, Herrera studied at the Santa Fe Indian School and later at the University of New Mexico. He first gained recognition for his traditional Pueblo ceremonial dancer paintings in the Studio Style before later developing an acclaimed modernist and abstract body of work.
His paintings are represented in numerous museum collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. In 1954, he was awarded the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques in recognition of his artistic achievements.
