German Jugendstil Brass Stamp Box GES. GESCH Mosaic Lid C1900

Item Details

This German desk stamp box dates to the Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) period of the early 20th century. It is of brass construction with a dark lacquered exterior and a hinged lid inset with an oval hardstone-style mosaic plaque. The plaque is engraved "Mundbad" (German for "mouth bath" or mouthwash), suggesting it was originally a promotional or advertising gift. The underside is stamped GES. GESCH., the common German abbreviation for Gesetzlich Geschützt ("legally protected"), a marking widely used on German decorative metalware and desk accessories of the period.

The box remains in good antique condition with age-related wear throughout, including surface scratches, rubbing, patina and areas of oxidation to the brass interior and fittings. The lacquered finish shows expected wear from use, and there are remnants of old paper adhered to the base inside the box. The hinge is sound, and the lid opens and closes correctly.
