This is a lot of 7 decorative ceramic border tiles featuring a repetitive relief pattern of circular rosettes framed by a continuous scrolling "wave" or "guilloche" motif. Each tile measures 6”x3”. These are historical pieces from the Menlo Park Ceramic Works, an East Coast pottery firm that operated between 1879 and 1914.
Manufacturer and Historical Context
Company: Menlo Park Ceramic Works, located in Menlo Park, NJ.
Key Figure: The company is notable for its partnership with Charles Volkmar from approximately 1888 to 1894.
Proprietor: These tiles bear the initials "J.T.S." on the back for Jere T. Smith, who was the proprietor.
Significance: Known for "cuenca" (raised relief) tiles and intricate floral designs, their work is considered a historic treasure, with notable installations found in historic homes in New Jersey and New York.
