This is a one-off sale piece that was found buried in the ground. There could be others like it around but I can't be sure about that, either way it is the only one exactly like it that I have. I do have similar pieces not quite as wide that are not unusually aged but I haven't seen this broader type around much. They are thicker steel than the ones used today for the same purpose, I think they may only be medium carbon plates but that is an estimation. Newer ones FWIW only have three spike holes. These older ones come out close to twenty pounds each and we are selling them by the weight as much as age and scarcity. The newer ones of this size come out only fifteen pounds so message us if you prefer those, and chances are those newer ones are high carbon but I don't have any right now and they aren't marked anyway.

This one measures close to 13 7/8" x 7 13/16". These were extruded pieces so the edges can round just a little. The exact length and width of the outside dimensions is not important to anything, the larger plate will spread the load on the wood underneath a little better.

Plates like these are used where a rail line divides into two lines, or the reverse. The gravel goes down, then the wooden tie or sleeper, and then a plate like this. The rails sit on a brace that rides between the little ridges you see, and plates like these permit that rail to move in or out. Anything like this you see us with was discarded or scrapped, and we sell them as-is. If you message in advance and let us know what you want to do with this or other such items, we can probably help to set you up with what would work best. So far our customers have been divided between artistic projects, construction projects, and collectors. Yes when it comes to old rusty used railroad hardware we have something for everyone!

The Post Office is nearby and we are packing the railroad items up as we list any so pay no attention to the delivery estimate which is not anything we control, you should have this pretty quick. Located in Boykins, VA zip code 23827 so if you are in the area you can pick them up for no shipping charge. I can fit one into a Priority Flat Rate Legal Size envelope, and two into a Medium Flat Rate Box. Two would be the weight limit.
