The obverse features Goetz’s masterful allegorical composition depicting a youthful figure representing progress standing before the globe. At his side are a vigilant griffin, symbolizing strength and guardianship, and an owl representing wisdom and knowledge. Encircling the design is the inscription DEUTSCHE TATKRAFT (“German Enterprise” or “German Resolve”), celebrating the spirit of innovation and determination that fueled one of history’s greatest periods of engineering advancement.
The reverse commemorates the year 1924, featuring a magnificent Zeppelin gliding effortlessly across the sky while a traditional sailing vessel traverses the sea below. Together, the two forms of transportation illustrate humanity’s remarkable evolution from the Age of Sail to the dawn of modern aviation. Framing the design is the Latin motto PER ASPERA AD ASTRA (“Through Hardships to the Stars”), a timeless expression of perseverance and mankind’s relentless pursuit of progress.
Karl Goetz (1875–1950) is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest medallic sculptors. His works chronicled many of the defining events of the early twentieth century and remain prized by collectors worldwide for their exceptional artistry, symbolism, and sculptural depth. Original Zeppelin medals rank among his most admired creations and continue to be sought after by numismatists more than a century later.
