This is a very nice base to a Civil War Confederate Read Artillery Shell that is in excellent ground recovered condition. The base is with a full bronze sabot and still attached a small section of the iron base of the shell. The sabot exhibits deep rifling marks cut into it as the shell traveled down the cannon tube on its way to the target. The brass of the sabot is now with an attractive green aged patina and firmly attached to the iron base. This artifact was recovered from the vicinity of the Battle of Trevilian Station which was fought on June 11–12, 1864. A very attractive artifact from a hotly fought engagement.

The Battle of Trevilian Station was fought in Louisa County, Virginia on June 11–12, 1864, and was the largest and bloodiest all-cavalry battle of the American Civil War. Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan sought to destroy the Virginia Central Railroad and link up with Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley but was blocked by Confederate Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton.

NOTE: We have several examples of this type of artifact. You will receive one that is like the one illustrated but will not be the exact one depicted. All came from the vicinity of Trevilian Station.
