This is a fine Civil War Artillery Schenkl Fuse with plug that is in excellent ground recovered condition. It is constructed of bronze and measures 2½ inches in length with all threads intact. The top flange is with two cutouts for the spanner wrench that tightens it into the nose of the shell. The top is impressed ‘J.P. SCHENKL – PAT.OCT. 16.1861’ and is ever so slightly misshaped from impact. Accompanying the fuse is a miss-matched plug both of which were recovered in the vicinity of the Battle of Trevilian Station on June 11–12, 1864
The Battle of Trevilian Station was fought in Louisa County, Virginia on June 11–12, 1864, and was the largest and bloodiest all-cavalry battle of the American Civil War. Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan sought to destroy the Virginia Central Railroad and link up with Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley but was blocked by Confederate Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton.
