Item Details

  • Date Letter: K (1805)
  • Type: Combination Baby Rattle & Whistle
  • Material: Sterling Silver and Coral
  • Measurements: approx. 13cm long

A Georgian sterling silver combination baby rattle and whistle made by Elizabeth Morley and hallmarked for London, 1805. The baluster-shaped body is decorated with bright-cut engraving and incorporates a pierced central section containing the internal rattle elements. The lower terminal forms a whistle, while the upper section retains its natural coral handle fitted with a silver collar. A suspension ring is attached for securing the rattle to clothing, as was customary for early 19th-century nursery items. Georgian rattles by Elizabeth Morley are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples retaining their original coral handle.

In good condition with age-related wear throughout, including surface scratches, small dings and general wear to the silver. The coral handle shows natural wear and minor surface marks consistent with age. The whistle remains functional. The rattle retains its internal elements, although the sound may be reduced due to age and wear. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
