This *RARE SURVIVOR* GRUEN Over-Sized Case Airflight Jump-Hour - N 510 SS - with the scarce Blue Grey Ring around the Silver Face variation is in good overall preowned physical vintage condition! Shows expected age/use/handling/storage related wear, surface scratches, tarnish, debris, etc. consistent with prior heavy usage. This survivor amazingly still winds and runs very well keeping excellent time, see Timegrapher screenshot! Appears to be mostly original with the service history unknown, aside from the markings inside of the caseback. Bezel does not currently rotate. Crystal is cracked, as pictured. A new silicone band with quick-release has been added and it also includes the pictured Speidel stretch band that was on it when I acquired it.
Recently acquired at a local South Orange County Oceanfront Home estate sale.
The Gruen Airflight Jump Hour N510SS is a highly coveted vintage pilot's watch produced in the late 1950s and 1960s. It is famous for its mechanical jumping complication that flips the dial numerals from a 12-hour (1-12) to a 24-hour (13-24) format at noon and midnight.
Key Features
Movement: Powered by the manual-wind Gruen Caliber N510SS (or 510RSS). It features a smart cam-driven date disc mechanism that toggles the hour window.
Case Size: While traditional vintage watches are small, the "large case" Airflights measure roughly 35mm to 36mm (with some over-sized diver or pilot variants pushing up to 36.5mm+).
Protection: Many N510SS models incorporate a secondary inner back within the case to protect the movement from dust and magnetic fields.
Dial Operation: The dial's jump feature operates at 1:00 (13:00) and 1:00 AM, with 12:00 (Noon/Midnight) remaining a constant anchor until the jump completes.
