Complete group of ten original hand-colored astronomical diagrams published by James Reynolds, 174 Strand, London (c.1846), together with the separately issued Movable Horizon wheel from The Chart of the Heavens. Lithographed by John Emslie. These Victorian instructional plates are celebrated for their vivid hand coloring and striking scientific visualization. This grouping includes many of the most desirable diagrams—The Sun and Solar Phenomena, The Planets, The Earth and Its Atmosphere, and Telescopic View of the Moon—along with the rare mechanical horizon component often missing from surviving sets.
This group includes the desirable Transparency Diagram of the Phases of the Moon, issued with cut-out phases designed to be held to light. Transparency plates are among the most coveted in the series and frequently found damaged or missing—this example survives in particularly good condition with clean apertures and strong color.
Each plate retains strong color and clean impressions, with only light age toning typical of mid-19th century educational prints. Offered as a long-kept collection and ideal for collectors, designers, or institutions assembling a representative group of Reynolds’ astronomical works.
