​These pictures are enlarged reproductions taken from some of the favorite illustrated books of past centuries, which may be seen in the Rare Book Collection of the Walters Art Gallery.


​Nos. 1-14 are woodcuts from the Hortus Sanitatis (i.e. “Garden of Health”) first printed at Mainz, Germany in 1491. It is a natural history and herbal based on fact and fancy, compiled from excerpts of writers of antiquity and the Middle Ages.


​No. 15: A woodcut from Robertus Valturius, De Re Militari (About Military Matters), printed at Verona, Italy, in 1472—a fascinating work that discusses the art of war as known to the strategists of the Renaissance.


​Nos. 16-22: Woodcuts from Sebastian Munster, Cosmographia Universale, printed in Cologne, Germany in 1575—a cosmography describing and illustrating all the regions of the world then known—including the cities, the natives, the flora and the fauna.


​Nos. 23-24 are engravings from Edwards and Darby, A New Book of Chinese Designs . . . London, 1754—consisting of oriental decorative motives to be used by English craftsmen during the mid-18th century fad for so-called “Chinoiseries.”
