The Auvard Speculum, named after French obstetrician and gynecologist Alfred Auvard (1855-1940) is a type of self retaining vaginal speculum - meaning it could hold the vagina open without needing to be held by the operator. It was used for douching, operating with continuous irrigation and examinations. This particular instrument comes in 2 parts. 1) A heavy solid metal cylinder - hollow with one section open to fit on the handle. 2) A long metal, hollow, 3 sided curved handle spreading out to saddle shape and back on 80 degree angle to a wide curve shape. The holes were used for tape and tied to stirrups (therefore self retainer). This museum quality example of an Auvard Speculum is in lovely condition with a 21 cm handle, a total weight of 1100 grams (the weight section itself is 860 grams) and was produced in the early 20th century. The handle is stamped BRITISH MADE, whilst the surname of the surgeon who owned the speculum is engraved on both the handle and the weight. Inspection available as is local pick up.
