The Royal Marines are the elite amphibious infantry and commando force of
the United Kingdom’s naval service. Their origins date back to 1664, when the
“Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot” was formed during the
reign of King Charles II. This makes the Royal Marines one of the oldest
military corps in the world.
Originally created to fight aboard warships and conduct amphibious
assaults, the Marines became known for their discipline and adaptability.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, they served throughout the expanding
British Empire, taking part in conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars, where
they fought both at sea and on land. Royal Marines detachments were standard
aboard Royal Navy ships, providing security, sharpshooting, and boarding
parties.
In 1802, King George III granted the title “Royal Marines” in recognition
of their service. Throughout the Victorian era, they fought in campaigns across
Africa, Asia, and the Americas, often supporting imperial operations and naval
expeditions.
During the two World Wars, the Royal Marines adapted to modern warfare.
In the First World War, they served in naval battles and trench warfare,
including at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. In the Second World War, they
played major roles in amphibious raids and beach landings.
A major transformation came in 1942 with the creation of the Royal Marine
Commandos. Inspired by special operations forces, these units were trained for
rapid assaults, raids, and unconventional warfare. They became famous for their
toughness and their demanding commando training course, symbolized by the green
beret.
After World War II, the Royal Marines served in numerous conflicts,
including the Korean War, the Falklands War, and operations in Iraq and
Afghanistan. In the Falklands conflict, 3 Commando Brigade played a decisive
role in retaking the islands from Argentina.
Today, the Royal Marines specialize in amphibious warfare, Arctic
operations, counterterrorism, and rapid-response missions. They work closely
with the Royal Navy and allied forces around the world. Despite their
relatively small size, the Royal Marines remain one of the most respected
commando forces internationally, known for endurance, professionalism, and
versatility.
