A refined early 19th-century Rosewood tea caddy of sarcophagus form

This elegant Georgian Rosewood tea caddy, dating to circa 1820, represents the height of Regency domestic sophistication. Constructed in the classic sarcophagus form, the piece is veneered in beautifully figured Rosewood, featuring a striking grain that wraps seamlessly around the tapered body and chamfered lid. The exterior is further elevated by delicate Boxwood stringing and retains its original French polished finish, which has developed a rich, deep patination over the last two centuries.

The caddy is adorned with its original cast brass lion mask ring handles to the sides, a quintessential Regency motif that adds a sense of stately character. Upon opening the lid, the interior reveals a well-appointed three-compartment arrangement. It contains two removable tea canisters with matching Rosewood lids and Boxwood edging, flanking a central aperture. This central well houses a replacement cut-glass mixing bowl, traditionally used for blending different tea leaves or holding sugar, which fits within the circular recess. The underside of the lid retains a vibrant red paper lining, providing a bold contrast to the dark timber and the internal base is covered with a dark red leather gold tooled skiver.

This piece has been sympathetically restored and thoroughly checked over in our workshop to ensure it meets the highest standards. The original lock is present and remains fully functional, accompanied by a working key. During the Georgian era, tea was an incredibly expensive luxury commodity, often kept under lock and key to prevent pilfering by household staff. This caddy serves as a fantastic functional antique, offering both historical intrigue and a decorative presence that speaks for itself.

Condition Report

The caddy is in excellent structural condition, having been professionally checked in our workshop. It retains its original French polish, showing only the minor surface marks and age-related wear consistent with a piece of this antiquity. The glass mixing bowl is a later replacement but is appropriate in style and fit. The lock and key are in good working order.
