An unissued Museum grade Eccles Davy Lamp.
This is a remarkably rare opportunity to acquire a "new old stock" Eccles Type 6 Davy miners safety lamp, manufactured by the Protector Lamp & Lighting Co. Ltd of Eccles. Finding a lamp of this vintage in such pristine, unused condition is incredibly rare, as most were subjected to the harsh and abrasive environment of the British coal mines. This particular piece has never seen service underground, remaining in what can only be described as the best condition one could hope to find. The Brass body is beautifully preserved, having been nicely polished to a high gleam that highlights the absence of the typical dents, scratches, or heavy patination usually associated with these industrial tools.
The lamp is complete with its original provenance in the form of two distinct tags or tallies. The first is a Brass tally marked "B.C.C. 15 DAW MILL," and the second is a matching Aluminium tag for the miner, stamped "RJB 15 DAW MILL". Daw Mill Colliery, located in Warwickshire, was one of the UK’s most productive coal mines before its closure in 2013, making these specific tallies a poignant connection to the final chapters of British deep mining. The Eccles Type 6 was a mainstay of the industry, specifically designed as a flame safety lamp to detect the presence of firedamp (methane) while providing a secure light source for the miner.
Visually, the lamp is a masterpiece of functional engineering. The glass remains crystal clear, protected by the traditional four-pillar Brass frame, and the bonnet carries the original manufacturer's stamped circular plate. This plate confirms the lamp as a "Type 6" with the relevant Ministry of Power safety approvals. Whether for a serious collector of mining memorabilia or as a striking industrial design piece for a home office, this unused Eccles lamp is a superior specimen that truly speaks for itself.
