This 1894 cover is a spectacular example of Western Stagecoach and Pioneer Postal History. It represents the tail end of the legendary stagecoach era in the Pacific Northwest, just as the railroads were permanently changing the American landscape.
Postal Identification: Commercial Illustrated Advertising Cover (often called a "Corner Card").
The Origin: San Francisco, California.
Stamp: 2-cent Brown Columbian Exposition Issue (Scott #231). "Landing of Columbus." While issued for the 1893 World's Fair, these were still being used in general circulation in 1894.
The Postmark: SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. JUN 26, 6-PM, 1894.
Cancellation: A Machine Flag Cancel (specifically a Barr-Fyke or American Postal Machines model). The "bars" to the right of the date stamp were designed to cancel the stamp efficiently while leaving the date clearly legible.

The Route: From Coast to Canyon. In 1894, this letter followed a hybrid path of "Iron Horse" and "Stage Horse". It departed San Francisco via the Southern Pacific Railroad, traveling east across the Sierras. Interchange: At Ogden, Utah, it would have been transferred to the Oregon Short Line (OSL) heading northwest toward Idaho. The "Last Mile": In 1894, while the railroad reached near Boise, the California, Oregon, and Idaho Stage Company was still the primary logistics provider for passenger and express traffic to the surrounding mining camps and rural outposts that the tracks hadn't yet reached.
Historical Significance: The California, Oregon and Idaho Stage Company was one of the last great stagecoach conglomerates. By 1894, they were fighting a losing battle against the expansion of the railroads. This cover is a "death knell" artifact of that romantic era.
