Up for sale is an incredibly rare and historically significant pair of Samuel Winslow 2-Wheel Inline Roller Skates.
While Samuel Winslow is famous for his 1880s "Vineyard" models, this specific pair predates the official 1880 patent and the "Vineyard" branding. These skates feature the rare "PAT. APPLIED FOR" stamp, dating their production to a very narrow window between 1878 and July 1880.
Key Historical Markings:
The footplates are clearly stamped with the early Winslow maker’s mark:
- “THE SAMUEL WINSLOW SKATE MFG CO MAKERS / WORCESTER MASS.”
- “MADE IN U.S.AMERICA”
- “PAT. APPLIED FOR”
Mechanical Condition:
Unlike most specimens from the 19th century that are seized by oxidation, these skates are in exceptional mechanical condition:
- Wheels: All metal wheels spin freely.
- Adjustment Screws: The finger-turn adjustment screws are fully functional and turn by hand, allowing the frame to slide for sizing.
- Frame: This is the rare "Rigid Frame" street/sidewalk version, designed to mimic the feel of an ice skate blade.
Aesthetic Condition:
The skates possess a fantastic, authentic "chocolate" patina. While there is surface oxidation consistent with their 145-year age, the metal is structurally sound. These have been lightly stabilized with acid-free oil to preserve the rare stamps and prevent further rust. All in all, an amazing piece of Americana and sports history for the serious collector!!!
