Early 20th-century Bausch & Lomb (B&L) magnifying glasses, particularly those with a Pearlescent or marbled look, were commonly made of early plastics such as Bakelite or Celluloid. These materials were chosen for durability, lightweight, and the ability to imitate luxury materials like mother of pearl.

Celluloid: Often used to create a pearlescent or tortoiseshell appearance, this was common for items around the 1910s–1930s.
