These are rare Ronson Metal Art Goods bookends, 1927, in all original condition. Pictured in the Ronson catalogue at page 42 of the Ronson Art Metal Goods antique reference book and also in Kuritzky's "Encyclopedia of Bookends", page 227, Plate 1527, entitled GREEK ATHLETE and given the highest rarity rating, 5.
They are made of heavy pot metal and these are finished in what Ronson called Pompeian Bronze and what we often call Depression Green. This painted green finish is meant to imitate the verdigris patina of ancient bronze and it does perfectly.
The bases are unique to Ronson and the most prized bases by Ronson collectors. They are faux marble, painted black and gray marble on metal and they look just like marble, you have to touch them to know the different. These are almost 6 inches tall by 7 and a half inches long.
They show an athlete, head down, arms crossed over his knees, nude except for a headband, probably resting after a race or other athletic competition. The muscular definition of the body is so well done and so classic.
Very good condition. Some minor wear from age and display. Several small flakes to the green patina decoration on one bookend. Please view all images as they are part of the description.
