Designed by Bruce Rushin, it features a depiction of two sailboats on the water with a grid background, symbolizing the Olympic sailing events (held in Weymouth and Portland).

In 2010 and 2011, the Royal Mint ran a public competition to design coins for the 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports. Thousands of entries were submitted, and the winning designs were chosen to represent each discipline.
