The tiles are 5.1" by 5.1", or 13 by 13 cm, containing
usual fritting and chipping at the edges.
With a combination of speckled manganese and blue, featuring
an octagonal center decorated with a fleur-de-lis corner motif, they are
remarkably similar to those of the Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens Porcelain
House, which may not be coincidental.
(See photos.) The tiles of the Porcelain
House were acquired in August of 1723 from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in a
total of 30,000 tiles, and were originally installed in the Old Orangery. In 1727, the court ordered another 5,000
tiles for the ballroom in the orangery.
