Description
A rare industrial gas detection instrument known as a Ringrose Sewer Gas Lamp, manufactured by International Gas Detectors Ltd of Leeds, England.
These specialised devices were used by engineers working in sewers, mines and confined spaces to detect dangerous gases such as methane and other combustible vapours. The internal alarm mechanism and indicator bulbs are visible through the glass chamber, making it a fascinating piece of industrial engineering.
The body is engraved with multiple patent references including “Ringrose Firedamp Alarm” along with Ministry of Fuel and Power approval markings and the manufacturer details for International Gas Detectors Ltd of Leeds.
This example appears to be an earlier model and is stamped 1221 to the upper body. It remains in original untested, as-found condition and displays beautifully with a strong industrial patina.
The carry handle that would normally be fitted to the top appears to be missing, but this does not detract from it as an impressive display piece.
A superb item for collectors of mining, engineering, industrial or scientific instruments.

Condition
Untested, as-found condition.
The lamp shows surface wear, oxidation and patina consistent with age and industrial use. The internal components appear present and visible through the glass chamber but functionality has not been tested.
The original carry handle that would normally sit at the top of the lamp appears to be missing. There are general marks and wear to the metal body along with dust within the glass chamber.
Overall it remains a very presentable example suitable for display.
The unit has not been dismantled or opened by us and is being sold in untouched, as-found condition.
