A Victorian sterling silver combination baby rattle and whistle, made by Hilliard & Thomason. This is a traditional mid-19th-century example, combining a whistle terminal with decorative rattle elements, intended as a christening or nursery gift.
Maker: Hilliard & Thomason
Assay Office: Birmingham
Date Letter: D (1852)
Material: Sterling silver
Length: approx. 10.6 cm
Total Weight: 55 grams
The rattle is of traditional form, with a whistle mouthpiece at one end and a suspension ring at the other. The body is decorated with applied and chased detailing, typical of Victorian silver babyware. Hallmarks are present but worn and difficult to read; the Birmingham assay mark and date letter are identifiable.
Very good overall condition.
Some light surface marks consistent with age and handling.
The handle appears to have been replaced at some point, as this type typically uses a coral handle.
Returns are handled in line with eBay policy and the returns setting on this listing.
