Hand crocheted cottage shawl in a beautiful natural undyed dark brown/black wool yarn with scattered longer light colored hairs similar to mohair. It is edged with rows of single crochet to keep the edges from stretching out of shape. This is a brand new item, never worn.  Very authentic look for multiple eras and locations.

This is a new, unused shawl, hand crocheted. It is very warm and comfortable and it offers excellent coverage. It measures 92" from side to side, 51" from side to point and 31" from the center back to the bottom point.

It can be hand washed gently in cool water. Do not rub or twist. Lay flat to dry, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.

According to Mary Konior's book Crocheted Lace, (copyright 1991, Sterling Publishing House, New York) The Cottage Shawl or Charity Shawl.. "The Cottage Shawl was so common during the mid- and late Victorian periods that it almost merits the status of national dress.  A sturdy outdoor version, often made in a serviceable grey with a scarlet border, was well in evidence in industrial, agricultural and fishing communities in England as a work shawl."  The Cottage or Charity shawl "is of course, a larger version of the small patchwork square known today as the granny square, that is generally used for blankets.  The distinction between a heavy outdoor shawl and a crochet blanket is that traditionally a shawl was med in one piece, and a blanket, being much heavier, was made from an assembly of patches.

Treble-block designs with mitered corner increases were well established by the 1860's, and in 1862 Eleonore Riego, a famous Victorian needlewoman, gave this method for working a shawl corner in La Mode Winter Book."
