An authentic vintage Peterson of Dublin System Standard, shape 314 — the medium full-bent of the celebrated System 300 group. Carved in Peterson's craggy rustic finish over an oxblood-toned briar, fitted with a bright nickel military mount and a bent vulcanite P-Lip stem. The pipe has been gently cleaned and refreshed; the chamber is reamed and the airway clear, so it is ready to be enjoyed straight away. Offered with its original Peterson's "Thinking Man" box.

The System — why it matters

Charles Peterson's cool, dry smoke

First patented by Charles Peterson in the 1890s, the System remains Peterson's signature engineering. A reservoir, or sump, is drilled into the briar shank below the draught hole, catching condensation and tobacco moisture before it can travel up the stem. Combined with the graduated bore and the upward-facing P-Lip, the result is the cooler, drier smoke the marque built its name on.

Moisture reservoir — the patented sump in the shank collects condensate for a drier draw.
P-Lip mouthpiece — directs smoke up toward the palate rather than onto the tongue, easing tongue-bite.
Nickel military mount — the push-fit metal ferrule lets the stem be drawn for cleaning without stressing the shank, and gives the System its distinctive look.

Overall Grade Very Good

A clean, lightly restored estate example. Honest age-appropriate wear; cleaned and ready to smoke.

Briar & Finish

Deep rustic finish, dark and craggy with warm oxblood highlights. Strong throughout with no cracks or fills observed; trace debris in the deepest crevices, characteristic of the texture.

Chamber & Rim

Bowl reamed and cleaned; inner rim and walls sound. Light darkening to the rustic rim consistent with age; no burn-out or charring of note.

Nickel Mount

Bright nickel military ferrule, secure on the shank. K&P / Peterson stamps and the three pseudo-hallmarks legible; fine surface scratches and light patina from handling.

Stem & P-Lip

Bent vulcanite stem cleaned and freshened, seating well in the military mount. P-Lip button intact; only minor handling marks. Airway clear.

Stamping

Shank stamping clear and readable, with the slight softness typical of a rusticated surface. Country and shape number legible.

Box

The vintage Peterson's box is present, in the teal & cream "Thinking Man" livery with the Dublin & London Kapp & Peterson device. Edges rubbed and lightly soiled; structurally sound.
