Description
Presenting this large and beautifully carved Squamish Nation Chief head / bust, hand carved from one piece of Cedar and signed on the reverse “Dale Brown – Squamish.”
This is a strong and expressive piece with real presence. The head is carved in high relief, with bold facial features, crisp detail and confident depth throughout. The features are powerful but well balanced, with rounded carved feathers framing this incredible face in a way that feels intentional and grounded.
The carving shows excellent craftsmanship, with clean cuts and a clear understanding of form. The wood has aged attractively, developing a deep patina that enhances the depth of the carving and highlights the hand-worked finish. Detail remains sharp, giving the piece a sense of strength and clarity.
The reverse of the piece has been hand signed "Dale Brown Squamish" in ink.
Born in 1971 and raised on the Tsartlip Reserve, David Brown is a prominent Squamish Nation artist whose work bridges the traditions of his heritage and the Nisga’a Nation, into which he was adopted. A vital voice in contemporary Coast Salish art, Brown is celebrated for hand-carved cedar wall art and panels that distill ancestral stories into clean, powerful motifs. His craftsmanship places him in the elite ranks of Squamish carvers such as Xwalacktun, Aaron Nelson-Moody, and members of the Baker family, making his work a cornerstone for serious collectors of Northwest Coast Indigenous art.
This rare piece displays beautifully as a standalone sculpture and would suit collectors of Indigenous Canadian, Squamish or Northwest Coast art, as well as those seeking an authentic hand-carved statement piece.
Size & Weight
This incredibly large example stands 36cm in height and measures 19cm in width and 10cm in depth. It has been carved from one solid piece of Cedar and weighs 1.396 kilograms.
Condition
Presented in very nice vintage condition. There are light signs of age and handling, as you would expect, which sit comfortably with the piece and add to its character. No breaks, repairs or losses. The carving remains strong, clean and sharply detailed throughout.
A compelling and well-carved vintage sculpture with real presence and warmth. Pieces of this scale and quality are becoming increasingly hard to find, particularly when signed. A wonderful addition to any collection of Northwest Coast or Indigenous-inspired art, or as a statement decorative work in its own right.
