About the artist Piet Parra: Dutch artist Pieter ‘Parra’ Janssen (born 1976) is best known for his surreal bird-like characters and distinctive use of saturated colors. His early work explored vibrant hand-drawn letters and humor, in recent years, his work has evolved into gorgeously layered abstract interpretations of his core figures.
Using flat, saturated planes of bold blues, reds, and pinks, Parra (born Pieter Janssen) paints faceless female characters in abstract domestic scenes that recall the work of Tom Wesselmann and Henri Matisse. The Dutch illustrator, painter, and animator has also created cartoon-like figures with beaks or otherwise bird-like heads. Parra began his career drawing flyers and posters for music venues. He later employed his eccentric, hand-drawn approach to illustration and design in his fine art practice. Parra's work has been exhibited in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Hong Kong, London, and Amsterdam, and has been acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Celebrated by galleries and championed by a devout underground following, Parra has become a respected multimedia artist, through solo exhibitions spanning Asia, the United States, and Europe. Working across large-scale public sculpture, painting, drawing, and textile work, Parra creates an enigmatic and instantly recognizable style that defies easy categorization. His work is in the public collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Parra is the co-founder of the cult apparel label ByParra and a member of the music group Le Le and MICH. The artist Parra lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
