Date:  1947

Description:  Feature the following Rexall Magazine cartoon cover:

  • July 1947:  While Woody Woodpecker lights firecrackers in the pants of Wally Walrus... Andy Panda sneaks up to light the explosive that Woody is holding... All in celebration of America's Independence Day on July 4, 1947.  The issue is noted as the "35th Anniversary Issue"; likely in connection with their introduction of local franchises for the Vinol mixture of a wine and cod liver oil tonic... providing the first major success for Detroit's Louis Kroh Liggett, a patent and franchise specialist for drug stores.

This popular monthly publication featured stories, photos and advertisements that were of interest to readers throughout the United States.

Measurement:  7.5" x 10"

Condition:  Fair condition with 1" separation at lower edge of binding; spotting noted at bottom margin of cover; and two approx. 1/2" tears at right margin. As noted on cover from over 70 years in storage.

Note:  As is common with magazines and newsprint of this vintage, it is likely that a faint musty smell may still exist as the materials have been in storage for over over seven decades. Prior moisture noted at bottom margin. We'd recommend consulting any of the many online recommendations available for mitigating any lingering scents. These artifacts are rare and worthy of archival protections that will preserve the items for many years to come.

Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 16,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.

Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
