A stunning, original and rare example of  a 1967, Seiko Sportsmatic 5. The Sportsmatic is the precursor to the Seiko 5, which was to become the most successful line in mechanical watch history. 

The iridescent dial is in near mint condition, and the hands, index markers and date window are also near mint, all present stunningly.

The crystal is new, perspex, was replaced in the overhaul.

The bracelet is new, quality Duraflex brand, will fit up to approx. 21.5 cm wrist.

The 6619A automatic wind movement is one of the engineering marvels that helped create the reputation for excellence that Seiko has deserved to this day. It has been professionally overhauled/serviced and I confidently guarantee it for 90 days.

This Seiko Sportsmatic 5 represents an important chapter in horological history, is in excellent, original condition (except the bracelet) and ticks all the boxes for the serious collector.

Overhaul/Service Explained 

I am often asked about what an overhaul entails. So I have started adding a photo of the movement, disassembled ready to go through the cleaning machine. All old dried up lubricants, crud and anything else that shouldn't be there is cleaned away. Then, the movement is reassembled, lubricated, adjustments made and regulated. Routinely, the back and the crown seals are replaced (where possible) as are the spring lugs. The case is lightly re-finished if necessary. Also the glass is re-polished if required and possible.

A Note about the tmegrapher result

lAfter overhauling and calibration, this watch performs exceptionally well so I include a photo of the timegrapher reading. Please be aware that this reading was taken on the bench and results may vary in the real world because accuracy depends on several variable factors, mainly temperature, power on the mainspring and general conditions of use.

About vintage mechanical watches:

A vintage mechanical watch will not perform like a modern quartz (electronic) watch. Also, with age comes fragility and it may no longer be ideal as a daily wearer. It should be treated for what it is, something old, classical and special. Treat it as you would a vintage car - not ideal to use as a “daily driver”. Keep it in the condition at which you bought it and it will hold or, indeed, increase its value. Use it every day and it will go backwards.

SEIKO 5 HISTORY (provided by a colleague trading on Ebay as market*master):

First released in late 1963 the Original Seiko 5  is a modified SEIKO SPORTSMATIC.

Seiko decided they needed an affordable watch that was versatile and durable. An everyday device that could handle a wide variety of different situations and environments. So was born the '5' concept.

The '5' came from the 5 features they wanted to incorporate into the watch.

These were:

1. Automatic winding

2. Day/date display

3. Water resistance

4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position

5. Integrated metal bracelet

The '5' was an immediate success and has gone on to become the most successful line of mechanical watches in history.
