John II Komnenos was Byzantine emperor from 1118 to 1143. He was also known as John the Good. He was the eldest son of Alexios 1. During his reign
he made alliances with the Holy Roman Empire in the West, defeated the Hungarians and Serbs in the Balkans, and personally led campaigns against the Turks. John marched into Muslim Syria as head of combined Byzantine and crusader state forces, but was disappointed by the Crusaders’ reluctance to fight alongside his forces. This coin from his reign features a depiction of Christ on the obverse and John’s on the reverse.
