George Bell's edition of Ovid's complete works, influenced by Valpy's edition. Henry Bohn first published this edition in the early 1850's. Ovid's complete works are somewhat difficult to find in any edition (especially before 1900). His magnum opus, the Metamorphoses, was hugely influential in Roman literature. Ovid's mythology weaves together Greek and Roman tradition beautifully. His Ars Amatoria (Art of Love) resulted in his banishment to the Black Sea by the Emperor Augustus. The Emperor felt that within that work, the poet was encouraging Romans to act in a manner that was not virtuous. A sharp example of the Roman literary giant's surviving writings. Very Good or better.
Light rubbing to the extremities, a contemporary name in each volume.
