Elymais was an autonomous state from the 2nd Century BC (following the Seleucid Empire) until the early 3rd century AD frequently a vassal under Parthian control. It was located at the head of the Persian Gulf in present day Khuzestan, Iran. It was succeeded by the Sasanian Empire. In 187BC the Elymaeans who were skilled archers, killed Antiochos III the Great after he pillaged their temple of Bel. The region’s “wealth in silver and gold” is referred to in the deutero-canonical work 1 Maccabees, which states “its temple was very rich, containing golden coverings, breast plates, and weapons left there by Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian king who first reigned over the Greeks. So Antiochos came and tried to take the city and plunder it, but he could not because his plan had become known to the citizens.”
