Without knowing anything about this book by George Bernard Shaw I was struck by the incredibly detailed wood engravings by John Farleigh.  These images are very striking in black and white and demonstrate the highest degree of skill by the artist of this rather rare form.

The novel itself is interesting, originally published in England in 1932, outraging the religious public in multiple countries. In the book the woman seeks spiritual answers from first a missionary and then multiple characters, some of which speak with great authority about God. Some of them she dispatches with a knobkerry, a club. She is finally told by a wise old person to work in a garden and later to marry an Irishman, the idea of which sent South African whites and German Nazis into hysterics.

But the illustrations are worth the price of the book.  Note the endpapers inside the covers.
