The United States Large Cent was made of nearly pure copper. These coins were minted from 1793 to 1857.

Composition: Nearly pure copper, or copper as pure as it emerged from smelting. No deliberate addition of other metals, such as in bronze

Size: Normal diameter (27.5 mm) 10.89 grams

Heaviest pieces weighed almost 13.4 grams!

History: One of the first coins struck by the United States Mint. Produced in relatively large quantities to meet the growing demand for coinage. Most have been melted down through the years. Replaced by the smaller Indian Head Cent in 1857.

Collectibility: Highly collectible, with examples ranging from well-worn specimens to those in exceptional condition. Depending on the date, mintage, variety and condition, a U.S. Large Cent can be worth anywhere from one cent to several thousands of dollars today.
