Designed by Charles Schneider and made in France in transitional Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, ca. 1922-1924. Marked on the base with the signature Le Verre Francais, France, Ovington New York.
Le Verre Francais was a special line of art glass designs made by the Schneider Glassworks in France between 1918 and 1932. Charles Schneider and his brother initially worked for Daum Glass in the early 1900s before opening their own glassworks in 1913. The Le Verre Français name was used by the Schneiders for 2 or 3-layered cameo glass vases, bowls, ewers, lamps and other items in a style which combined art deco and art nouveau features. France would be added to the signature if the item was intended for export. Ovington was a prominent New York-based china, glass and art store that sold Le Verre glass in the US. Ovington's family was well-known supporters of the art community.
The condition is very good, no chips, cracks or repairs. The base bottom shows some wear from being displayed. As any antique and hand made art object, this vase could have unique characteristics, e.g. color and shape variations, related to the nature of the craft and production technique of the times.
The vase features a distinctive dark orange satin body with a glossy blue overlay, etched with a nature inspired floral and foliate pattern. The overlay looks nearly black over the orange but one can see the blue in the base especially when displayed in the light. This could be a one of a kind addition to any discerning glass collection and a great accent of the interior decorations.
