USHABTIES: Ushabtis, also known as shawabtis, were small funerary figurines used in ancient Egypt to serve the deceased in the afterlife. First appearing during the Middle Kingdom and becoming common in the New Kingdom, their name means “answerer” or “servant.” These figures, typically made of wood, faience, or stone, were placed in tombs to perform manual labor on behalf of the dead, ensuring comfort and prosperity in the afterlife. Often inscribed with spells from the Book of the Dead, ushabtis were believed to magically come to life when called upon. Their size, detail, and number varied according to the owner’s status, with wealthier individuals buried with hundreds of them. Symbolizing devotion and eternal service, ushabtis reveal the ancient Egyptians’ deep faith in life after death and their desire to prepare for it through ritual and craftsmanship.
