Original early-19th-century line engraving of Dublin’s Custom House, the grand neoclassical waterfront building designed by James Gandon and opened in 1791 as Ireland’s principal customs headquarters. The plate is signed in the lower margin “Drawn & Engraved by J. Kirkwood, 11 Crow St.” John Kirkwood was a distinguished Dublin engraver active in the 1820s–30s, noted for finely ruled architectural and maritime views and for security/medal work with his son later in the decade. The scene looks across the River Liffey with a square-rigged ship under sail and busy rowing boats, showing the Custom House prior to its 20th-century alterations.
Printed on wove paper with crisp line work (the tight parallel ruling in the sky and water is clearly visible). Presented in an older bevel-cut mat; overall about 15.5 x 16.5 inches.
Condition
Antique example with light overall toning, scattered foxing and small surface scuffs/abrasions—most noticeable in the sky and water—and age wear to the mat including corner creases. No tears noted; ready to re-mat and frame. Please review photos.
