This large, 30mm beautifully designed and well preserved coin with a clear date was minted during the Colonial era in the Americas. Louis XV (1710-1774) known as Louis the Beloved was king of France from 1715 until his death in 1774. He succeeded his great grandfather, Louis XIV at the age of five. Until his maturity at age 13, the kingdom was ruled by his grand-uncle, Philippe II until 1723. His reign of 59 years was second only in length to his predecessor, Louis XIV. He ceded New France to Great Britain and Spain at the end of the disastrous Seven Years War in 1763. His grandson and successor, Louis XVI inherited a kingdom on the brink of financial disaster that played the groundwork for the French Revolution of 1789.
