Library of Congress - List of Books (with References to Periodicals) Relating to Child Labor.
By Appleton Prentiss Clark Griffin.
Published in Washington by the Government Printing Office in 1906.
An early, comprehensive bibliography compiled by the Library of Congress's Division of Bibliography to document the growing movement against child labor. Created at a time of increasing awareness of the issue, the catalog served as an important resource for researchers, reformers, and lawmakers. The 1906 edition was compiled under the direction of Appleton Prentiss Clark Griffin, the chief bibliographer at the Library of Congress.
The catalog was not merely a list of books; it also included extensive references to articles in periodicals of the era. It was arranged by country and featured both author and subject indexes to facilitate research. The entries reflected the ongoing public debate by featuring writings from diverse figures, including social reformers such as Jane Addams and Florence Kelley, labor leaders like Samuel Gompers, and investigators from the National Child Labor Committee, including Owen R. Lovejoy. A second, greatly expanded edition was published in 1916.
The 1906 catalog arrived during a period of rising public awareness of the negative effects of child labor, which had long been a common practice in American industry and agriculture. The Industrial Revolution, combined with waves of immigration, created a large pool of young laborers, leading to widespread exploitation. The publication of the bibliography coincided with significant developments in the anti-child labor movement.
