Bonanza Books, New York
Hardcover in original dust jacket
A handsome oversized edition of Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater, edited by Eugene V. Connett and devoted to the history, traditions, techniques, personalities, and sporting culture of Atlantic Coast waterfowling.
Originally copyrighted in 1947 by William Morrow & Company, the work brought together contributions from a distinguished group of sporting writers and authorities, including Frederick C. Lincoln, Philip H. Babcock, Ransom P. Kelley, Charles E. Wheeler, Lynn Bogue Hunt, Richard L. Parks, Dr. Edgar Burke, Ludlow Griscom, and others. This Bonanza Books edition was issued by arrangement with William Morrow. The photographs show no separate publication date for the Bonanza printing, so it is best listed simply as a later Bonanza edition rather than as the 1947 first edition.
Particularly attractive are the full-page color plates by celebrated sporting artists Lynn Bogue Hunt and Dr. Edgar Burke, accompanied throughout by numerous period photographs and drawings. The illustrations document both the birds themselves and the sporting culture surrounding Atlantic tidewater duck shooting.
Connett occupies an important position in twentieth-century American sporting-book history. A noted author and editor of hunting and fishing literature, he was also associated with the celebrated Derrydale Press. The jacket flap itself describes the purpose behind this volume: preserving the recollections and knowledge of the era of market gunning and the sporting traditions that followed before that firsthand knowledge disappeared.
This copy is bound in the publisher's teal cloth, with bright gilt spine titling and blind-stamped duck decoration to the front board. The binding remains secure and tight, and the boards are clean and attractive. There is only a slight softening or turn to the upper front corner; otherwise the edges and corners remain quite clean.
The original illustrated dust jacket is present. The jacket shows age-appropriate shelf wear, including a tear at the upper left front near the fold/hinge, edge wear, and other minor rubbing and handling marks. The jacket has also been price clipped. These flaws are cosmetic and do not affect the structural integrity of the book.
Internally, the contents are exceptionally presentable: clean, bright, and complete. The numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations remain crisp, while the color plates retain rich, vibrant color.
An appealing volume for collectors of American sporting literature, waterfowling history, duck hunting, Atlantic coastal history, sporting art, Lynn Bogue Hunt, Eugene Connett, or books associated with the broader Derrydale tradition.
