Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus on Dec 15, 37AD. Nero was the great-great-grandson of Emperor Augustus. When his father died, his mother Agrippina the Younger married Emperor Claudius who adopted Nero. When Claudius died in AD 54, Nero ascended to the throne. During the early years his reign was guided by his mother. Nero orchestrated the murder of his mother, his wife Claudia Octavia, and his step-brother Britannicus. Nero ordered the construction of amphitheaters and appeared as an actor, musician, and charioteer, which scandalized the aristocrats but made him popular with lower-class citizens.
