I’m very excited to offer this incredible, restored c.1910’s era gravity bowl style chandelier featuring an incredible, richly molded, reverse-painted art nouveau shade!

This fixture, from about 1910, is in fantastic vintage condition with a nice patina that can only be acquired through decades of oxidation. I have not polished the metal components as to preserve their interesting color, but it all did get a thorough cleaning. There are some minor surface irregularities, but this can be expected from any fixtures from this era.

A fixture like this is special, as it is representative of the kind of light that a modest working class family would have hung in their house, because even in an era of excess, not everyone lived in opulent, lavish mansions. Lights like these are often tossed in renovations and are not easy to come by in good condition anymore.

These quasi-“pan” lights, sometimes also called “gravity bowls” are usually comprised of a large central glass bowl shade, sometimes dotted with smaller shades around their perimeter. This particular light, featuring a large glass shade with stylized, reverse painted art nouveau floral motifs , is remarkable. That the “bowl” shade is open at the top, providing “up” light as well as soft transmitted light through the satin finish glass itself makes for an intimate, cozy glow. It is in very good vintage condition overall, free of noteworthy flaws save a handful of scattered flea bites here and there as well as some minute paint losses in places, which cannot be spotted except on very close inspection. I particularly like the glass used to execute this piece, featuring old timey air bubbles and particulate inclusions, a telltale sign of age.

The brass keyless socket is original, while the chain, wiring, and mounting hardware are all new, the wire being cloth covered like the original would have been. I am rarely able to reuse original fixture chain as it is usually found badly corroded - a common problem with vintage lights.

The scale of this light makes it ideal for a medium sized room, at about 12 - inches across, measured at the widest diameter of the shade, and about 26.5 - inches long. I can adjust the length up or down a bit by adding or removing some chain - just let me know! I picture it in a living room, a bedroom, over a stairhall landing/common space, or even in a larger closet. Pan style/gravity bowl lights were wildly popular in the early 20th century, and are very versatile light fixtures that work in just about any space.

All the necessary mounting hardware is included in the sale. Light bulbs are not included.
