This is a Wagesa (輪袈裟) designed specifically for use during the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage (Shikoku Hachijūhakkasho Junpai), one of Japan’s most revered Buddhist pilgrimages.

The front features gold-stitched characters reading “四国八十八ヶ所巡拝” (“Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage”) and “南無大師遍照金剛” (“Homage to the Great Master Kōbō Daishi”), honoring the founder of Shingon Buddhism.

A paulownia crest (kiri mon) is also embroidered at the collar, a traditional motif associated with sacredness and imperial blessings.
