This is a Wagesa (輪袈裟) designed specifically for use during the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage (Shikoku Hachijūhakkasho Junpai), one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimages in Japan.

The front is embroidered in gold thread with the phrases “四国八十八ヶ所巡拝” (“Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage”) and “南無大師遍照金剛” (“Homage to the Great Master Kōbō Daishi”), who is venerated as the spiritual founder of the route.

A kiri mon (paulownia crest) is also embroidered on the collar, a traditional Japanese symbol of nobility and reverence.
