*** JAPANESE CARVED HARDWOOD TENGU ***
Antique - Meiji Period - (1800's)
H: 10" x W: 6.5" x D: 4.5"

Japanese carved hardwood figure of a Tengu.

The carved figure stands dressed in the robes of a Yamabushi priest
on a rocky outcrop
atop a detachable carved base.
It has detachable wings.

Note: The Tengu is a mythical creature that originated in the Shinto religion
but was later adopted by some branches of Buddhism.
It has primarily bird-like features and parodies the role
of a priest through its hat and robes.
The figure would have come from a temple group sculpture
which likely comprised a number of Tengu in various poses.
