This labyrinth of a book was written in three parts; the first covered 1863-1920, the second 1921-1966. The third part was written after Richard had retired and the books were amalgamated, with previous mistakes and omissions rectified, and extra photographs which were not available at the times of publication added.

The Honours and Awards range from the Victoria Cross to Cadet Force awards; there are no Campaign medal awards included except the Waterloo Medal which was the first medal awarded to all participants regardless of their rank. All foreign awards are also included in rank order. Included at the end of the book are two sections showing all the Royal Sussex prisoners-of-war from 1940-1945, and all Royal Sussex personnel who died from 1939-1953 in alphabetical order including country of burial or memorial.

This is a compilation of Honours and Awards to the 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot from 1701 to 1966 when the regiment was amalgamated into the Queen’s Regiment. It has taken 25 years of research to finally finish something Richard Buckman had started in 1996. He was researching his maternal grandfather’s Service Record when he found that he had been awarded a Mentioned in Despatches in 1919, so decided to find out what the regiment had been awarded.

With the great assistance of Alan Readman, assistant archivist at the West Sussex Record Office, he had access to all their records and photographs to use in his books. At the time he was working at the British Library Newspaper Library in Colindale and had access to all British and foreign newspapers with their press write-ups and photographs, including British Forces newspapers circa WWII.

A WORD ON LEAD TIME / DELIVERY

Dear Customer

We wanted to explain our lead time of 15 days. Often buyers don’t read a seller’s description.

This title is one of several thousand titles that are printed for customers upon demand, known as POD or print on demand.

We place orders once a week with the printers, this is done during the daytime every Monday (Apart from Bank Holidays, when it’s done on a Tuesday)

All orders placed in that week are printed & couriered to us in one large parcel which we then break down into our individual customer orders for onward shipping.

The reason for the 15-day lead time is as follows. If someone places an order on a Sunday night then their order will go into the printers the following day, however if someone orders a book on a Monday night then that order will be submitted to the printer on the following Monday.

Because we cannot possibly know when a customer is going to make a purchase we have to allow ourselves this leeway. It is therefore all down to what day of the week you place your order for this book.

Customers ordering on a Sunday evening will probable get it about a week quicker than those ordering it on a Monday night (Because that weeks order would have been placed with the printer during Monday daytime)

We accept that some customers won’t read this & still send us a message saying “When are you going to post my book?” but at least if we can reduce the amount of messages like that then this statement has been worth making.
