Having hosted international sport for more than 130 years, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is considered a cornerstone of Sydney's rich sporting culture. From humble beginnings as a garden and cricket ground granted to the British Army in the mid-19th century, the SCG, which adopted its name in 1898, has particularly close affinity with cricket, having been the home ground of New South Wales domestic cricket since 1878.Its stands recognise some of the state's highest sporting achievers - such as Bradman, Churchill and Messenger - while a panoply of statues, including of Richie Benaud, Reg Gasnier, Johnny Warren and Paul Roos, capture the breadth of Australian sport the SCG has hosted over the decades.
