Godsey's collection of photographs of the people of the Ozarks became a
minor publishing hit when it was first released in 1977. The people,
the lore, and the lifestyles captured in his work have become more
evocative over time.
Book nitty-gritty: 128 pp, principally
photographs, with some short text pieces. The 3rd printing (erroneously
referred to as a "3rd edition") was overseen by Godsey's son and claims
to be "more photographically accurate" than the previous 2 printings.
The photos (some of which are quite brilliantly realized and others
which appear closer to snapshots) present well on the 3rd printing's
heavy, glossy stock. This book was originally released by a tiny
publisher, The Ozark Mountaineer, and later released by another tiny
publisher, Land Press.
Godsey shot these photographs between 1930
and 1950. These b&w images are firmly planted in the proud
tradition of 20th century American documentary photography. -Theseus
